A Chinese military transport aircraft—the domestically made Y-20—flew a Western Theater Command team into Xizang's Gyirong County on August 26, after a mudslide originating from Nepal caused major casualties and missing persons in the border trade hub. Within hours, 111 elite rescuers from China's national team, equipped with detection, demolition, and medical gear, were airborne from Chengdu. On the ground, over 40 local responders and 43 vehicles are operating, with 119 reinforcements and 93 machines en route, plus 423 standby troops ready. The central bank opened an emergency fund channel, releasing 3 billion yuan ($420M) to Shigatse and 600 million to Gyirong. Road clearing, search operations, and 24-hour command posts are now fully activated.(Photo by Xinhua News Agency)
